Green Queens’
Easy Cannabutter
About this Recipe
Making Cannabutter at home is notoriously time consuming. Here is our favorite recipe to simplify the process for you as much as possible.
The Tutorial
- 1 cup water
- 1/8 ounce Cannabis (per 1 stick of butter)
- OR 1/2 ounce Cannabis (per 4 sticks of butter)
- 1/2 – 2 cups butter
- Cheesecloth (for straining)
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1
Preheat oven to 240 F. Break up the Cannabis in a plastic bag or grinder. Spread the herb evenly on a baking sheet. Bake for 30 minutes. Allow your herb to cool before moving on to the next step.
Step 2
Melt the butter in a saucepan on medium-low heat. Once butter is melted, add 1 cup of water. Next add your finely ground herb into the mixture.
Step 3
Reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Tip: if you notice your water has evaporated, add more. The water prevents the butter from burning the bottom of the pan and evaporating.
**Make sure your butter never reaches a boil**
Step 4
Place a strainer over the bowl you want your butter to go in. Cover the strainer with your cheesecloth. Pour butter over the cheesecloth, straining out the plant material. Tip: Press a spatula or spoon against your cheesecloth to make sure you are getting the remaining butter out.
Step 5
Cover the butter. Place it in the refrigerator until it harden. Once hardened, the butter separates from the water. Drain the water by cutting along the sides of the bowl with a knife and pouring it out.
I’ve been making oil for years and watched your youtube and wanted to comment. May help others. If you use an air tight container for the fridge, flip it over, the water drains from the top. Also you can add more hot water if you accidentally evaporate too much off. You are correct about low temp, they want the oil temperature under 210°F so 1 or simmer. Nice work.
Thank you so easy n simple . Love it
This makes the best butter for cookies. They are the only thing that really helps the nausea from my wife’s chemo. Thank you!
Can this also be done in a crockpot? Any adjustments need to be made?
Just making it while I am writing this. Can you please put up a brownie recipe. Just wondering if I should use all the butter in one brownie recipe 8X8 pan? Since usually a brownie recipe for a 8X8 pan is 1/2 cup and this recipe makes a cup of butter. Really want to make some brownies tomorrow after my butter is ready!
hi Smalls,
I use a whole stick when making mine, and they come out perfect. I just buy a Betty Crocker box and follow instructions on the box. I replace the oil with the Cannabudder, and use the leftover water from the budder for your brownie water.
What do you use brownie water for? That’s cool there’s a use for the water.
The brownie mix calls for a 1/4 cup of water, I use the canna water and then drink the rest.
I am making this at this moment but by accident my butter boiled for about a few seconds. I grabbed it off the heat immediately and then turned it down. It’s fine now. I’ve done a similar recipe before seeing you’re recipe and it didn’t work out. I’m wondering if it’s just because it takes practice or something like that. When I did it last time, it wasn’t for 3 ho
Sorry I’m not good with typing, it wasn’t for 3 hours of simmering. It was more like an hour. They also never decarbonized. Hopefully it turns out this time. I’ve wasted much flour doing this lol…

I made this recipe using a crockpot. It was great! I kept it low so it never boiled.
This will be my first time attempting to make Canabutter. There are various recipes on YouTube that range from wicked difficult to rather basic. I’m thrilled you posted your recipe because it makes the step by step process relatively easy.
I also love being educated by a smart, exceptionally beautiful young lady who is confident in presenting her recipes on line. Thank you!
